Description

Juicy meatballs simmered in a rich caramelized onion gravy and topped with melted cheese, inspired by classic French onion flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500 grams ground beef
  • 3 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup shredded cheese
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, eggs, minced garlic, salt, and black pepper until just mixed.
  3. Shape the mixture into evenly sized meatballs.
  4. Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat and add sliced onions. Cook slowly until golden and caramelized.
  5. Add beef broth and thyme to the skillet and stir.
  6. Brown the meatballs separately, then add them to the onion sauce.
  7. Simmer until meatballs are fully cooked and sauce slightly thickens.
  8. Transfer to a baking dish, sprinkle shredded cheese on top.
  9. Bake until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  10. Serve hot and enjoy.

Notes

  • Cook onions slowly for the best sweetness and depth of flavor.
  • Do not overmix the meatball mixture to keep them tender.
  • You can substitute mozzarella or Gruyere cheese.
  • Let the dish rest a few minutes before serving for better texture.
