Description
Authentic Portuguese bifana sandwiches made with tender marinated pork simmered in a rich garlic and paprika sauce, served inside crusty Portuguese rolls for a flavorful and comforting meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 pounds thinly sliced pork shoulder
- 6 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 teaspoons paprika
- 1 teaspoon white pepper
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 cup white wine
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 6 crusty Portuguese bread rolls
- 3 tablespoons mustard
Instructions
- Heat a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat.
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced pork, garlic, olive oil, paprika, white pepper, salt, bay leaves, white wine, and chicken broth. Mix well and marinate for at least 1 hour.
- Transfer the marinated pork mixture into the skillet and bring to a gentle simmer.
- Cook the pork slowly, stirring occasionally, until tender and the sauce slightly thickens, about 35 minutes.
- Slice and lightly toast the Portuguese rolls if desired.
- Fill each roll with the juicy pork and spoon extra sauce over the meat.
- Serve hot with mustard on the side.
Notes
- For deeper flavor, marinate the pork overnight.
- Toast the bread lightly to prevent sogginess.
- Store leftover pork separately from the bread for best texture.
- Add hot sauce or sautéed onions for extra flavor.
