Description
A classic Australian sausage sizzle made with juicy grilled beef sausages, soft white bread, sweet golden onions, tomato sauce, and optional mustard.
Ingredients
Scale
- 8 beef sausages, about 680 g total
- 8 slices white sandwich bread
- 2 medium brown onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/2 cup tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup yellow mustard, optional
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Heat a large frying pan or barbecue hotplate over medium heat for 3 to 4 minutes.
- Place sliced onions in a bowl with olive oil, salt, and black pepper, then toss until lightly coated.
- Add onions to one side of the pan and sausages to the other side.
- Cook sausages for 12 to 15 minutes, turning often, until browned and cooked through.
- Stir onions regularly until soft and golden.
- Rest sausages for 2 minutes.
- Place one sausage diagonally on each slice of bread.
- Top with warm onions, tomato sauce, and mustard if using.
- Fold the bread around the sausage and serve warm.
Notes
- Use medium heat so the sausages cook evenly without splitting.
- Cook the onions slowly for a sweeter flavor.
- Add sauce just before serving to keep the bread from getting soggy.
- Store cooked sausages separately from bread for best leftovers.
