These Vanilla Custard Cream Squares are a layered dream of creamy vanilla custard and crisp puff pastry, topped with a dusting of powdered sugar. A nostalgic and comforting dessert that’s easier to make than it looks.

- 2½ cups whole milk
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 sheets puff pastry
- Powdered sugar, for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Bake puff pastry sheets flat between parchment and a second baking sheet until golden and crisp. Let cool.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, whisk together milk, sugar, eggs, flour, and cornstarch. Stir constantly until thickened.
- Remove from heat, stir in butter and vanilla extract. Let custard cool completely.
- Line a 9×9 inch baking dish with one sheet of baked puff pastry.
- Pour cooled custard over the bottom pastry layer and smooth the top.
- Place the second puff pastry sheet on top of the custard.
- Chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or overnight to set.
- Dust with powdered sugar before slicing and serving.
Notes
- For best results, chill overnight before slicing.
- Wipe the knife between slices for clean edges.
- Store leftovers covered in the fridge for up to 4 days.
- Can be frozen in individual portions, though texture may slightly change.
