Description

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla.
  4. Alternate adding the flour mixture and milk, beginning and ending with the flour. Mix until just combined.
  5. Pour batter evenly into prepared pans and smooth the tops.
  6. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. For the frosting, beat butter until creamy, then add cocoa powder, powdered sugar, and heavy cream gradually, mixing until fluffy and spreadable.
  8. Spread frosting between layers, over the top, and around the sides of the cake. Slice and serve.
