Description

The Best French Onion Beef and Noodles is a comforting, hearty dish that combines tender beef, savory French onion flavors, and perfectly cooked egg noodles in a rich, creamy sauce. It’s an easy one-pot meal ideal for busy weeknights or cozy weekends.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb beef stew meat or ground beef
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (if using stew meat)
  • 1 packet French onion soup mix
  • 1 (10.5 oz) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 (10.5 oz) can French onion soup (or beef consommé)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 12 oz egg noodles
  • 2 cups beef broth or water
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. If using stew meat, heat olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Brown the beef on all sides. If using ground beef, cook until fully browned. Drain excess fat if needed.
  2. Add the French onion soup mix, cream of mushroom soup, French onion soup, and beef broth to the skillet. Stir well to combine.
  3. Bring to a simmer, reduce heat, cover, and cook for 20–25 minutes until beef is tender (longer for stew meat).
  4. Meanwhile, cook egg noodles according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  5. Once the beef is tender, stir in sour cream and cooked noodles. Mix until well combined and heated through.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with parsley if desired, and serve hot.

Notes

  • Use ground beef for a quicker version or stew meat for a more traditional texture.
  • Add sautéed mushrooms or caramelized onions for even more flavor depth.
  • This recipe can be made in a slow cooker—just brown the beef first, then cook on low for 6–8 hours, adding noodles and sour cream at the end.
  • Leftovers store well and taste even better the next day.
