Description

Steamed Gai Lan with Hoisin Garlic Sauce is a simple yet flavorful Chinese side dish featuring tender Chinese broccoli drizzled with a sweet, savory, and garlicky hoisin-based sauce. Perfectly balanced and easy to prepare, it complements rice bowls, noodle dishes, or grilled proteins beautifully.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb Gai Lan (Chinese broccoli), trimmed and rinsed
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce (low sodium preferred)
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 1 tsp rice vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp sesame oil
  • Toasted sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Trim the tough ends of the gai lan and rinse thoroughly.
  2. Steam the gai lan in a steamer basket over boiling water for 5–7 minutes until bright green and tender-crisp. Remove and set aside on a serving plate.
  3. In a small saucepan, heat vegetable oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Stir in hoisin sauce, soy sauce, water, rice vinegar, and sesame oil. Simmer for 1–2 minutes until the sauce slightly thickens.
  5. Drizzle the warm sauce over the steamed gai lan.
  6. Garnish with toasted sesame seeds if desired and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Do not over-steam the gai lan to preserve its crunch and color.
  • You can substitute hoisin sauce with oyster sauce for a different flavor.
  • Serve with jasmine rice or as part of a dim sum spread.
