Description

A juicy, flavorful double smash burger inspired by Sonic Drive-In, layered with melted cheese, crisp toppings, and a tangy secret sauce, all packed between toasted buns.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 1/2 cup sliced dill pickles
  • 1/2 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1/2 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons mustard
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon pickle juice (optional, for sauce)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil or butter (for buns)

Instructions

  1. Divide the ground beef into 8 equal balls. Do not overwork the meat. Season each with salt and pepper.
  2. Heat a cast iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Once hot, place the beef balls on the surface and smash them flat using a spatula or burger press.
  3. Cook the patties for about 2-3 minutes on the first side until the edges are crispy and browned. Flip and immediately top 4 of the patties with a slice of cheese. Cook for another 1-2 minutes.
  4. Stack a plain patty on top of a cheese-topped patty to create 4 double-stacked burgers.
  5. Meanwhile, toast the burger buns in a skillet with a little oil or butter until golden.
  6. In a small bowl, mix mustard, mayonnaise, ketchup, and pickle juice to make the sauce.
  7. To assemble: Spread sauce on both the top and bottom buns. Layer with shredded lettuce, chopped onion, pickles, and the double-stacked burger patties. Close with the top bun.
  8. Serve immediately with fries or your favorite sides.

Notes

  • Use a burger press or two spatulas to achieve a proper smash for crispy edges.
  • Customize toppings like adding grilled onions or jalapeños for a spicy kick.
  • Swap American cheese with cheddar or pepper jack if preferred.
