Description

This skillet-baked macaroni and cheese is the ultimate comfort food, featuring tender pasta coated in a creamy cheese sauce, topped with golden breadcrumbs, and baked to perfection in a rustic skillet.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni (uncooked)
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook elbow macaroni in salted water until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes.
  4. Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth and thickened.
  5. Stir in the cheddar and mozzarella cheese until fully melted. Add salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  6. Combine the cooked macaroni with the cheese sauce until evenly coated.
  7. Pour the mixture into a buttered, oven-safe skillet. Sprinkle breadcrumbs on top.
  8. Bake for 20–25 minutes until the top is golden and bubbly.
  9. Let rest for 5–10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use freshly shredded cheese for the best melt and texture.
  • Let the mac and cheese rest before serving to allow it to set.
  • For extra crunch, broil the top for a few minutes at the end of baking.
