Description
Overnight Crème Brûlée French Toast is a decadent and creamy breakfast casserole made by soaking bread in a rich custard overnight. Topped with a crisp caramelized sugar layer, it’s a perfect make-ahead dish for special mornings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf brioche or challah bread, sliced thick
- 6 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
- 1/4 cup brown sugar (for topping)
Instructions
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and layer the bread slices evenly.
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
- Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread, pressing down gently to soak all slices.
- Cover and refrigerate overnight (at least 6 hours).
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake the soaked bread uncovered for 45–50 minutes, until set and golden.
- Remove from oven and sprinkle brown sugar evenly over the top.
- Use a kitchen torch to caramelize the sugar until golden and crisp. Alternatively, place under a broiler for 1-2 minutes watching closely.
- Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm.
Notes
- Use sturdy bread like brioche or challah for best texture.
- Make sure to soak the bread well for a custardy interior.
- If you don’t have a torch, broiler works but watch carefully to avoid burning.
- Add fresh berries or whipped cream as toppings for extra indulgence.
