Description

Overnight Crème Brûlée French Toast is a decadent and creamy breakfast casserole made by soaking bread in a rich custard overnight. Topped with a crisp caramelized sugar layer, it’s a perfect make-ahead dish for special mornings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf brioche or challah bread, sliced thick
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and layer the bread slices evenly.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
  3. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread, pressing down gently to soak all slices.
  4. Cover and refrigerate overnight (at least 6 hours).
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Bake the soaked bread uncovered for 45–50 minutes, until set and golden.
  7. Remove from oven and sprinkle brown sugar evenly over the top.
  8. Use a kitchen torch to caramelize the sugar until golden and crisp. Alternatively, place under a broiler for 1-2 minutes watching closely.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm.

Notes

  • Use sturdy bread like brioche or challah for best texture.
  • Make sure to soak the bread well for a custardy interior.
  • If you don’t have a torch, broiler works but watch carefully to avoid burning.
  • Add fresh berries or whipped cream as toppings for extra indulgence.
