Description

Old Fashioned Goulash is a hearty and comforting American-style pasta dish made with ground beef, onions, garlic, and a rich tomato sauce, seasoned with Italian herbs and simmered with elbow macaroni. Topped with melted cheddar cheese, it’s perfect for a family dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 2 large yellow onions, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 cans (15 ounces each) tomato sauce
  • 2 cans (15 ounces each) diced tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon oregano
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni, uncooked
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, brown the ground beef over medium heat. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add chopped onions and garlic to the beef and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in water, beef broth, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, Italian seasoning, oregano, bay leaves, Worcestershire sauce, salt, garlic powder, and pepper.
  4. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
  5. Add uncooked elbow macaroni, cover, and cook for 12-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until pasta is tender and sauce is slightly thickened.
  6. Remove bay leaves before serving.
  7. Stir in shredded cheddar cheese or sprinkle on top before serving.

Notes

  • Use lean ground beef to reduce excess fat in the dish.
  • Stir occasionally while cooking macaroni to prevent sticking.
  • Optional: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes for a slight kick.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
