Description
Old Fashioned Goulash is a hearty and comforting American-style pasta dish made with ground beef, onions, garlic, and a rich tomato sauce, seasoned with Italian herbs and simmered with elbow macaroni. Topped with melted cheddar cheese, it’s perfect for a family dinner.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 pounds lean ground beef
- 2 large yellow onions, chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, chopped
- 2 cups water
- 1 cup beef broth
- 2 cans (15 ounces each) tomato sauce

- 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
- 1 tablespoon oregano
- 3 bay leaves
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 2 cups elbow macaroni, uncooked
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
- In a large pot, brown the ground beef over medium heat. Drain excess fat.
- Add chopped onions and garlic to the beef and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.

- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
- Add uncooked elbow macaroni, cover, and cook for 12-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until pasta is tender and sauce is slightly thickened.
- Remove bay leaves before serving.
- Stir in shredded cheddar cheese or sprinkle on top before serving.
Notes
- Use lean ground beef to reduce excess fat in the dish.
- Stir occasionally while cooking macaroni to prevent sticking.
- Optional: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes for a slight kick.
- Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
