Ingredients
Scale
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (heat-treated)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
- 1 cup mini chocolate chips
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (for topping)
- 2 tablespoons butter (for topping)
Instructions
- Line an 8×8-inch pan with parchment paper.
- Heat-treat the flour by microwaving it in a bowl for 1–2 minutes or baking at 350°F (175°C) for 5 minutes to kill any bacteria.
- In a large bowl, beat softened butter and brown sugar until creamy. Add vanilla and mix well.
- Gradually mix in the heat-treated flour and salt. Stir in the sweetened condensed milk until smooth.
- Fold in mini chocolate chips.
- Press the dough evenly into the prepared pan and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the semi-sweet chocolate chips and 2 tablespoons butter in 30-second intervals until smooth.
- Pour and spread the melted chocolate over the chilled dough layer.
- Refrigerate for at least 1 hour until set. Slice into bars and serve.
Notes
- For a crunchier texture, add chopped nuts or crushed pretzels to the dough.
- Use oat flour or almond flour for a gluten-free version.
- Store bars in the refrigerator for up to 1 week or freeze for up to 2 months.
- Heat-treating the flour is important to ensure it’s safe to eat raw.
