Description

Mum’s Traditional Cottage Pie is a comforting classic made with seasoned ground beef topped with creamy mashed potatoes and baked to golden perfection. This hearty dish is a family favorite perfect for cozy dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, corn)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 3 cups mashed potatoes (prepared)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and garlic, sauté until softened.
  3. Add ground beef and cook until browned. Drain excess fat.
  4. Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  5. Add mixed vegetables and beef broth. Simmer until the mixture thickens, about 10 minutes.
  6. Transfer the beef mixture to a baking dish and spread mashed potatoes evenly over the top.
  7. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top if using.
  8. Bake for 20–25 minutes until the top is golden and bubbly.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Use leftover mashed potatoes to save time.
  • Substitute ground lamb for a traditional shepherd’s pie variation.
  • Add herbs like rosemary or parsley for extra flavor.
  • Leftovers reheat well in the oven or microwave.
