Description

Mini Beef Wellingtons are bite-sized versions of the classic beef Wellington, with tender beef wrapped in a flavorful mushroom duxelles and puff pastry. These make for an elegant appetizer or a perfect party dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb beef tenderloin (cut into 46 small pieces)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 cup mushrooms, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small shallot, minced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 sheet puff pastry (cut into squares large enough to wrap the beef)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Heat olive oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Sear the beef tenderloin pieces for 2-3 minutes on each side until browned. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Brush with Dijon mustard.
  3. In the same pan, melt butter and add the shallot, garlic, and mushrooms. Cook until the mushrooms release their moisture and it evaporates, about 5-7 minutes. Add thyme, salt, and pepper, and cook for an additional minute. Remove from heat and let cool.
  4. Roll out the puff pastry and cut it into squares large enough to wrap around the beef pieces.
  5. Place a spoonful of the mushroom mixture in the center of each puff pastry square, then place the beef on top. Fold the pastry around the beef and secure the edges.
  6. Place the wrapped beef on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with the beaten egg to give a golden finish.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden and crispy and the beef reaches your desired level of doneness.
  8. Serve immediately and enjoy these delightful mini Beef Wellingtons!

Notes

  • For a more decadent flavor, you can add a layer of pâté or foie gras to the mushroom mixture.
  • Be sure to allow the beef to cool slightly after searing to prevent the puff pastry from getting soggy.
  • Mini Beef Wellingtons can be made ahead of time and refrigerated before baking. Simply bake them directly from the fridge, adding an extra 5 minutes to the baking time.
