Ingredients
Scale
- 6 cups crumbled cornbread (preferably day-old)
- 4 cups cubed white bread (toasted or day-old)
- 1 cup chopped celery
- 1 cup chopped onion
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning
- 1 teaspoon dried sage (optional, for deeper flavor)
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
- 3 to 4 cups chicken broth (as needed for moisture)
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- Optional: 1 cup cooked, shredded chicken or turkey
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and set aside.
- In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add chopped onion and celery, and sauté until softened, about 8–10 minutes. Remove from heat.
- In a large bowl, combine crumbled cornbread, cubed white bread, sautéed vegetables, poultry seasoning, sage, salt, and pepper.
- Add beaten eggs and 3 cups of chicken broth. Stir gently to combine. Add more broth as needed until the mixture is moist but not soupy.
- If using cooked chicken or turkey, fold it into the mixture at this stage.
- Pour dressing into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly. Bake uncovered for 45–55 minutes, or until the top is golden and set.
- Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Make cornbread a day in advance for best texture.
- You can prepare the dressing a day ahead and refrigerate until ready to bake.
- Customize with chopped boiled eggs or cooked sausage for added richness.
- Great served with gravy or cranberry sauce.
