Description
Homemade Saltwater Taffy Rolls are soft, chewy, and sweet treats made right in your kitchen. This nostalgic candy is fun to make, customizable in flavor and color, and perfect for wrapping up and sharing as a homemade gift or party favor.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 cup light corn syrup
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp flavored extract (vanilla, peppermint, strawberry, etc.)
- Food coloring (optional)
- Powdered sugar (for dusting)
Instructions
- Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly butter it. Set aside.
- In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar, cornstarch, corn syrup, water, butter, and salt. Stir constantly until the sugar dissolves.
- Attach a candy thermometer to the pan. Cook without stirring until the mixture reaches 250°F (hard ball stage).
- Remove from heat. Carefully stir in extract and food coloring (if using). Pour the hot mixture onto the prepared baking sheet.
- Let it cool until it’s warm enough to handle but not hot (about 10–15 minutes).
- Butter your hands and begin pulling the taffy. Stretch and fold repeatedly until it becomes lighter in color and firm (about 10 minutes).
- Form the taffy into long ropes and cut into bite-sized pieces.
- Dust with powdered sugar to prevent sticking and wrap each piece in wax paper or parchment.
Notes
- Always supervise children when working with hot sugar mixtures.
- You can divide the mixture after cooking and flavor/color each portion differently for variety.
- If taffy becomes too sticky while pulling, lightly butter your hands again.
- Store wrapped taffy in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
