Description
A cozy, layered dish featuring ground beef, thinly sliced potatoes, and melty cheddar cheese all brought together with a creamy herb sauce. Perfect for weeknight dinners or make-ahead meals.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef
- 4 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 ½ cups milk
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add chopped onions and garlic, and sauté until soft.
- Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in milk to form a smooth sauce. Season with salt, pepper, and thyme.
- In another pan, brown the ground beef until fully cooked. Set aside.
- Begin assembling the casserole by layering half the potato slices on the bottom of the dish.
- Spread half of the ground beef over the potatoes and drizzle with half the cream sauce. Repeat layers.
- Top with shredded cheddar cheese.
- Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes until golden and bubbly.
- Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Use a mandoline slicer for even potato slices.
- Letting the casserole rest helps the layers set and makes serving easier.
- Freshly shredded cheese melts better than pre-shredded.
