Description

A cozy, layered dish featuring ground beef, thinly sliced potatoes, and melty cheddar cheese all brought together with a creamy herb sauce. Perfect for weeknight dinners or make-ahead meals.


Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 4 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 ½ cups milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add chopped onions and garlic, and sauté until soft.
  3. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in milk to form a smooth sauce. Season with salt, pepper, and thyme.
  4. In another pan, brown the ground beef until fully cooked. Set aside.
  5. Begin assembling the casserole by layering half the potato slices on the bottom of the dish.
  6. Spread half of the ground beef over the potatoes and drizzle with half the cream sauce. Repeat layers.
  7. Top with shredded cheddar cheese.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  9. Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use a mandoline slicer for even potato slices.
  • Letting the casserole rest helps the layers set and makes serving easier.
  • Freshly shredded cheese melts better than pre-shredded.
