Description
This homemade gravy is rich and savory, made from pan drippings or broth with a smooth, velvety texture. Perfect for pairing with mashed potatoes, roast meats, or other comfort foods.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 tablespoons butter or drippings
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups broth (chicken, beef, or vegetable)
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder (optional)
Instructions
- In a saucepan, melt butter or heat drippings over medium heat.
- Once melted, whisk in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly, until the mixture turns golden brown.
- Slowly pour in the broth while continuously whisking to prevent lumps from forming.
- Continue to cook for 3–5 minutes, whisking frequently, until the gravy thickens.
- Season with salt, pepper, and any optional seasonings like garlic or onion powder.
- Serve immediately, or keep warm on low heat until ready to use.
Notes
- If the gravy is too thick, add more broth to reach your desired consistency.
- For a richer flavor, use pan drippings from roasted meats instead of butter.
- For a smooth gravy, make sure to whisk constantly as you add the liquid.
