- 240 milliliters boiling water
- 115 grams unsalted butter, softened (for sponge)
- 200 grams light brown sugar (for sponge)

- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 200 grams all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 0.5 teaspoon salt
- 100 grams unsalted butter (for sauce)
- 150 grams light brown sugar (for sauce)
- 240 milliliters heavy cream
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius and grease an 8 inch square baking dish.
- Place chopped dates and baking soda in a bowl, pour over boiling water, and let sit for 10 minutes.

- Gently fold in flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the softened date mixture until combined.
- Pour batter into prepared baking dish and smooth the top evenly.
- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until set and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

- Pour half of the warm sauce over the baked pudding and let it soak in. Serve warm with remaining sauce.
Notes
- Do not overmix the batter once flour is added to keep the sponge tender.
- Warm the sauce gently before serving if it thickens.
- This dessert can be made a day ahead and reheated before serving.
