Description
A comforting and flavorful garlic and herb mushroom strata with golden crust, creamy interior, and layers of earthy mushrooms, herbs, and cheese — perfect for brunch or make-ahead meals.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 cups sliced mushrooms
- 5 cups cubed day-old bread
- 6 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1½ cups shredded cheese (cheddar and mozzarella mix)
- 4 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, chopped
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
- Preheat Your Equipment: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a medium baking dish.
- Combine Ingredients: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Sauté mushrooms until golden and tender, about 7–8 minutes. Add garlic and thyme, cook 1 more minute. In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, and pepper.
- Prepare Your Cooking Vessel: Spread half the bread cubes into the greased baking dish, top with half the mushrooms and cheese. Repeat with remaining bread, mushrooms, and cheese.
- Assemble the Dish: Pour the egg mixture evenly over the entire dish. Gently press down with a spatula so everything soaks evenly.
- Cook to Perfection: Bake for 45–50 minutes or until puffed, golden on top, and set in the center.
- Finishing Touches: Let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing. Sprinkle with extra thyme or fresh cracked pepper.
- Serve and Enjoy: Serve warm with a crisp salad or fresh fruit on the side.
Notes
- Use a mix of cheeses for deeper flavor.
- Make sure bread is slightly stale or toasted to avoid sogginess.
- Tent with foil if the top is browning too fast during baking.
- Letting it rest after baking helps it slice cleanly and evenly.
