Description

Cornbread Chicken Dressing is a classic Southern comfort dish made with crumbled cornbread, tender chicken, and a flavorful blend of herbs and broth. It’s a savory, moist casserole perfect for holiday meals or family gatherings.

  • 6 cups crumbled cornbread (homemade or store-bought)
  • 2 cups cooked and shredded chicken
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1 cup chopped celery
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 2 1/2 to 3 cups chicken broth
  • 1 tsp poultry seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp dried sage
  • 1/2 tsp salt (or to taste)
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onion and celery, and sauté until soft (about 5–7 minutes). Remove from heat.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine crumbled cornbread, shredded chicken, sautéed vegetables, poultry seasoning, sage, salt, and pepper.
  4. Stir in beaten eggs and 2 1/2 cups of broth. Mix until well combined. Add more broth as needed to achieve a moist consistency.
  5. Spread the mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  6. Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes, or until the top is golden and the center is set.
  7. Let rest for 5–10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use rotisserie chicken for a quick prep shortcut.
  • Can be made a day in advance—refrigerate and reheat before serving.
  • Add chopped boiled eggs or cooked sausage for variation.
