Description

Copycat Ikea Swedish Meatballs are tender, flavorful meatballs made with a blend of ground beef and pork, served in a rich and creamy sauce. This comforting dish is perfect for dinner and replicates the iconic flavors of the Swedish favorite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Meatballs:
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ½ pound ground pork
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • ¾ cup plain breadcrumbs (gluten-free if needed)
  • 1 egg
  • ¾ cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • Cream Sauce:
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • ⅓ cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour)
  • ¾ cup vegetable broth
  • ¾ cup beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a small bowl, combine breadcrumbs and milk. Let soak for 5 minutes.
  3. In a large bowl, mix ground beef, ground pork, chopped onion, garlic, soaked breadcrumbs, egg, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  4. Shape mixture into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter, and place on a baking sheet.
  5. Bake meatballs for 15-20 minutes until cooked through and lightly browned.
  6. For the cream sauce, melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to make a roux.
  7. Gradually whisk in vegetable broth and beef broth, stirring constantly until smooth and slightly thickened.
  8. Add heavy cream, soy sauce, and Dijon mustard. Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  9. Add baked meatballs to the sauce and simmer for an additional 5 minutes to coat them in the creamy sauce.
  10. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or steamed vegetables.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, sauté the onions and garlic before adding to the meat mixture.
  • Use gluten-free breadcrumbs and flour if needed for a gluten-free version.
  • Meatballs can be pan-fried instead of baked for a crispier exterior.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
