Description
Buttery crumb bars with a chewy cookie-like base, a shower of melty chocolate chips, and a golden, crisp topping that makes every square irresistible.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon fine salt
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
Instructions
- Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving overhang for easy lifting.
- In a large bowl whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined.
- Cut the cold butter into the dry mixture with a pastry cutter or fork until it forms fine, moist crumbs that hold when pressed.
- Whisk the eggs with the vanilla in a small bowl, then pour over the crumb mixture and stir just until the dough comes together in clumps.
- Press about two thirds of the dough firmly and evenly into the prepared pan to form the base, then scatter the chocolate chips over the surface.
- Crumble the remaining dough evenly over the chips to create a nubbly top.
- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until the top is golden and the center looks set, then cool completely in the pan before lifting out and slicing.
Notes
- Note: Use very cold butter for the crispiest crumb.
- Line with parchment to guarantee clean removal and tidy edges.
- Cool fully before cutting for neat, bakery-style squares.
- Finish with a light sprinkle of flaky sea salt for contrast.
- Bars keep 4 days airtight at room temperature or freeze up to 2 months.
