Description

Chicken Shawarma with Yogurt Sauce is a flavorful Middle Eastern dish featuring marinated chicken cooked to perfection, served with a creamy yogurt sauce, and typically accompanied by warm pita or rice.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp ground cumin
  • 1 tbsp ground coriander
  • 1 tbsp ground paprika
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tbsp tahini
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice (for yogurt sauce)
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine olive oil, garlic, cumin, coriander, paprika, turmeric, cinnamon, cloves, lemon juice, salt, and pepper to create the marinade.
  2. Coat the chicken thighs in the marinade and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or overnight for best flavor.
  3. Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the chicken thighs for 6-7 minutes per side, or until fully cooked and golden brown on the outside.
  4. While the chicken is cooking, prepare the yogurt sauce by mixing plain yogurt, tahini, lemon juice, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Stir well to combine.
  5. Once the chicken is cooked, remove it from the heat and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing it thinly.
  6. Serve the chicken on a plate with a drizzle of yogurt sauce, garnished with fresh parsley. Optionally, serve with pita bread or over rice.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili flakes to the marinade.
  • For a more smoky flavor, grill the chicken over charcoal.
  • Serve with pickles or a fresh salad for added crunch.
