Description

Cheeseburger Hobo Packets are a fun and easy foil packet meal perfect for camping, grilling, or oven baking. Each packet is loaded with seasoned ground beef, potatoes, onions, and cheese, delivering all the flavors of a classic cheeseburger with minimal cleanup.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 4 tbsp ketchup (optional)
  • 4 tbsp mustard (optional)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Cooking spray or extra foil for sealing

Instructions

  1. Preheat grill to medium-high heat or oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a bowl, season ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Divide into 4 equal portions and shape into patties.
  3. Cut 4 large pieces of foil and spray each with cooking spray.
  4. Place a layer of sliced potatoes in the center of each foil sheet. Drizzle with olive oil and season lightly with salt and pepper.
  5. Add sliced onions on top of the potatoes.
  6. Place a beef patty on top of the onions. Add 1 tbsp ketchup and 1 tbsp mustard on each patty, if using.
  7. Seal the foil packets tightly and place them on the grill or in the oven.
  8. Cook for 30–35 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and beef is fully cooked.
  9. Carefully open the packets and sprinkle shredded cheese over the top. Close foil loosely for a few more minutes until cheese is melted.
  10. Serve hot, straight from the packet or transferred to a plate.

Notes

  • Use heavy-duty foil or double layer to avoid leaks.
  • Customize with other toppings like pickles, tomatoes, or bacon after cooking.
  • Try ground turkey or plant-based patties for a lighter or vegetarian version.
  • Great for camping — prepare packets ahead of time and keep chilled until ready to cook.
