Description

Brown Gravy Smothered Hamburger Steak is a comforting Southern-style dish featuring seasoned ground beef patties simmered in a rich onion and mushroom brown gravy — perfect over mashed potatoes or rice.

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined and form into 4-6 patties.
  2. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, melt butter and add sliced onions and mushrooms. Sauté until soft and browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in beef broth and soy sauce (if using), stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
  5. Bring the gravy to a simmer and return the patties to the skillet. Cover and simmer on low for 10-15 minutes until cooked through and the gravy has thickened.
  6. Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

Notes

  • Use lean ground beef to avoid greasy gravy.
  • For extra flavor, add a dash of garlic powder or onion powder to the patties.
