Description
Brown Gravy Smothered Hamburger Steak is a comforting Southern-style dish featuring seasoned ground beef patties simmered in a rich onion and mushroom brown gravy — perfect over mashed potatoes or rice.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce (optional)
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined and form into 4-6 patties.
- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt butter and add sliced onions and mushrooms. Sauté until soft and browned, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in beef broth and soy sauce (if using), stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
- Bring the gravy to a simmer and return the patties to the skillet. Cover and simmer on low for 10-15 minutes until cooked through and the gravy has thickened.
- Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
Notes
- Use lean ground beef to avoid greasy gravy.
- For extra flavor, add a dash of garlic powder or onion powder to the patties.
- Make it gluten-free by using gluten-free flour and breadcrumbs.
