Description

This Amish Applesauce Cake is a moist, old-fashioned dessert made with pantry staples and plenty of cozy spices. Perfect for fall or any time you crave a comforting, simple cake, it’s lightly sweetened with applesauce and filled with nuts and raisins for added texture and flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking dish or a Bundt pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the applesauce and vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  6. Fold in nuts and raisins, if using.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
  8. Bake for 35–40 minutes (Bundt pan may take longer), or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Let cool completely before slicing. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with glaze.

Notes

  • This cake stays moist for several days—store covered at room temperature.
  • Serve with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
  • Can be made ahead and frozen for up to 3 months.
  • Use chunky applesauce for extra apple bits in every bite.
